The Practice of Traditional Ottoman Art in Contemporary Times with Contemporary Themes
Miniature painting (minyatür) and the art of Illumination (tezhip) represent highly specialized fields of classical Ottoman Turkish fine arts. As forms of art and decorating, they peaked during the seventeenth century within the Ottoman Empire, but were also shared by other regional civilizations, most notably Persia. Having suffered a decline in the face of modern art in the early twentieth century, a revival of the art form has been apparent since the early 1980s. Şermin Ciddi engages in both the teaching and active production of these traditional art forms, with a distinctly contemporary emphasis. She is increasingly recognized within Turkey as a foremost practitioner and exhibitionist.
